Imagine you pull out your phone and ask your GPS, “Where's the best pizza near me?”

It shows you three restaurants. Beautiful photos. Great ratings. A big button that says, “Go here.”

So you go.

But here's what you don't know: the company behind that GPS owns all three restaurants.

Twenty other places? They're not even on the screen. One might be better. One might be cheaper. One might be right around the corner. But your GPS only takes you to businesses it owns.

Think about that.

You believe you're choosing the best restaurant. You're actually choosing from the restaurants somebody else decided you should see.

Now replace pizza with one of the biggest financial decisions of your life: buying a home.

A platform can help you search for houses, connect you with an agent, recommend a mortgage, suggest closing services, and keep a relationship with you long after the transaction.

Sometimes those services are connected by ownership. Sometimes it's a referral or partnership. Those are different arrangements, and they deserve different scrutiny.

And listen, that convenience might be genuinely valuable. The integrated option might even be your best deal.

But if you never compare, how would you know?

The system doesn't have to lock every exit. It only has to make its preferred path so easy that you stop looking for another one.

And there's a parallel in the information we consume. Your social media feed isn't a complete picture of the world. Algorithms decide which posts appear and which get less attention. Emotionally charged content can keep people reacting and scrolling.

Different industry. Different mechanism. Same question.

Who decides what you see, and what do they gain when you follow along?

I'm not against technology. I'm not against companies making a profit. I love efficiency.

I'm against confusing convenience with informed choice.

Before you hit the easy button, ask three questions.

What options am I not being shown?

Who benefits from this recommendation?

And can I freely choose something else?

Because if your GPS only shows you businesses it owns, you don't have a map of all your options.

You have a sales funnel dressed up as directions.

Empower the consumer instead of capturing them.

And if your business really offers the best route, prove it. Show people the whole map.
