The reverse mortgage conversation often has three people in it. The homeowner. The loan officer. And the adult child who has questions.

Most of the time, that third voice is not even in the room. But it is there. In how you describe the meeting later. In what you do not say. In whether you call your daughter before signing or after.

If you are considering a reverse mortgage, your kids will have questions. And those questions are usually not about being selfish. They are about not knowing.

The most common ones go like this. Will Mom still have the house? Will the lender take it when something happens? Will we still inherit anything? Will Dad run out of money and end up calling us? Those are not greedy questions. Those are scared questions. And they deserve real answers, not silence.

Here is what most families discover when they finally have the conversation out loud. Inheritance is not only about money. It is about identity, history, and what the home represents. Your children may be wrestling with the idea of losing the place where they grew up — even before they wrestle with the financial side. That is a separate kind of grief. It needs space, not defensiveness.

It also helps to name the second fear that adult children rarely say out loud. Sometimes they are afraid you will outlive your savings and they will be the ones writing the checks. So when they ask about a reverse mortgage, they are often really asking, "Are you going to be okay?" That is worth answering directly.

The families who do this well almost never do it perfectly. They do it openly. They get the questions on the table early — preferably before the loan officer is involved. They look at the actual numbers together. They invite the heirs into the explanation, not just the outcome. And what almost always lowers the temperature is information. Not pressure.

If you are thinking about a reverse mortgage and you have adult children, the strongest move is not to keep it quiet. It is to bring them in early — with someone who can answer the questions honestly. When you are ready, I am here for that conversation.
